Back to School Series #2 – Tips for Back to school moms…
Back to school series 2/6

Back to School Moms: Real Solutions from Real Moms Juggling It All – Tips
When it comes to back to school, most news coverage focuses on getting the kids prepared for the new school year, but what about the newest population of students…Moms?
In these uncertain times, a record number of moms are back in school to advance current careers, find new job options, and seize opportunities to contribute more to household finances during a recession.
How do the families of college moms cope? A group of courageous moms at Kaplan University (www.kaplan.edu), where nearly 75% of students are women and the average student age is 34, offer their tips for juggling family, work and school in a Web 2.0 world.
1.Gain the support of friends and family. We all need cheerleaders to successfully accomplish the many things moms do in any single day.
2.When you go back to school supply shopping for the kids, don’t forget your own supplies for online studying like printer ink and paper, a spare battery pack for the laptop and flash drives.
3.Prepare meals for the week on Sunday. Whether it’s a hearty soup, lasagna or a casserole, make meals that are filling and easy to take out of the freezer and reheat quickly.
4.Work as a team. Show the kids that running a family requires team effort and that your schoolwork is important too. Let them pitch in to help out with family chores.
5.Remind your significant other that he may need to brush up on his math and science skills because you will need him to help the kids out with homework.
6.Before you sit at your computer, take 15 minutes to do some stretching and/or a few sit-ups. Get the adrenaline pumping so that you are ready to commit to a few solid hours to studying and homework.
7.Instill in your children the value of making sacrifices. Teach them that hard work has positive results.
8.For those single moms or stay at home moms who sometimes have to do it alone, it’s ok to occasionally let the television be the babysitter when you have deadlines to meet. Don’t be too worried about it, as public and cable television have great, quality programs throughout the day that are educational.
9.Keep the faith. Everyone has their ups and downs, and sometimes, there are more downs than ups. At the end of the day you can still do this. Remind yourself how much your education means to you and of the future benefits it will bring to your entire family.
10.Plan some alone time, even if it’s a 20 minute soak in the tub to relax after the children are in bed.

-Post Blogher 2009- My Thoughts…
I have recently read a lot of posts and have heard a lot of things via twitter and Facebook regarding all of the Blogher bruhaahaa, I am totally dumbfounded by it all! I didn’t view blogher like this at all ??? Maybe I was in my own little world while there ? Or maybe it was because I wasn’t feeling my 100%, or maybe Carson Kressley, Paula Deen, and Tim Gunn had me in stardom mode ? I don’t know. I mean, I heard a rumor about issues, but just let it go as that, a rumor.
I realize now that some of them are true. I mean I just cannot even fathom about “the Croc guy” getting treated the way he did. He seems to me to be one of the sweetest guys I have ever met. For someone to talk to him like that is totally beyond me. And fighting over swag, is also over my head. I mean, I did get a lot of swag, but even the “covenant video camera” wasn’t worth fighting over. I say shame on anyone who would do this. I must admit, I did get some doubles on some smaller items, like Gerber teddy bears, but that was because I have 2 daughters that (now love them dearly). but if it would have meant me fighting or arguing for them, I would’ve let it go.
The only flaw I ran into was a mis-communication (I believe) where I was wanting to help out, and it fell through. Yes, I was upset, but after talking it through and thinking about it, I just chalked it up to just that…mis-communication, and let it go.
I know the RM. 704 party was off the hook, and yes, there was a huge hubbub over it, but if people were willing to push to get some cleaning products (which are awesome by the way) and some “adult toys”, I would’ve gladly given up my little brown bag (I don’t need it THAT badly). As a matter of fact I was gladly giving up my “toy” to someone (forgot who) but she never did come back or it. I just thought of it as a funny thing to show the hubby when I got home.
I guess I just don’t understand the whole pushing, fighting thing. Are these items really worth it ? I mean, I was going to blogher to re-meet my friends, network, learn, and make new friends, not for swag. yes, I enjoy swag… but that was the icing on the ‘blogher cake”. If I didn’t get even 1 piece of swag, I would’ve been happy.
My main sponsor… Collective Bias… who paid for me to go to the conference, I am sure, wasn’t sending me so I could see how much swag I could get. They sent me to learn. And to help out with the Bowlher project. Which, I have heard nothing but good things coming from it. I didn’t take over $130 for airfare and more $$ (for spending and cabs, and other things) out of my families “pocket” to go fight at a conference. I didn’t wear a dazzling dress (sponsored by La Grande Dame) to go fight in it, I wore it to promote the company, as I did while handing out the awesome bags from the company. And i didn’t stay with friends in hotels that they got sponsored, so I could come back to the room and talk about who I punched out to get some swag!
Fighting like this and speaking to people inappropriately in my book is totally inexcusable! These people should be totally ashamed and the fact that these people represent woman bloggers totally perturbs me. What are companies going to be thinking with this kind of representation ? We are all sitting here thinking some companies and PR people don’t get it (the whole social media thing) but maybe there are (obviously) some bloggers who aren’t getting it either. If I owned a company and paid for you to go represent me at a conference, and heard you acted like this, I would make u pay me every cent back. And going forward I would make sure I had recipients of any money sign something (kind of like they have at my kids school for field trips) stating that by accepting money you would be bound to represent the company in a professional manner. For my children, it states something like they are still bound by the school rules and that they are representing the school and need to act worthy of it). I don’t know how this would be, but we are adults and should not need these types of “policies” but perhaps some companies may now consider something of the sort. with all of the publicity the whole “mommy blogging” things has been getting and the FDC coming into the picture, this sure wasn’t great timing. I mean, I can imagine the headlines now… “Big companies schmooze woman bloggers at conference, but even that isn’t enough, they still fight for more!” We don’t need more bad publicity that doesn’t represent the majority of us, but this is exactly what news media look for, the stand out shock news.
I am glad I didn’t personally view any of these “issues” and I am even more glad I wasn’t part of it.I am glad I spent my time at blogher for a much bigger purpose than getting some swag.
Like connecting with wonderful people like Maria Bailey, MJ Tam, Aparna Vashisht – Rota, Renee Bloggett, Victoria Taylor, Paul Jordan, Denise McCarthy, Pamela Punt, Carol Cain, Tracey Wynne, Jamie Wilson, Leigh Caldwell, Mariana Perez, Linsey Knerl, Katherine Morin, Jennifer Leal, Gillian Kushner, Janice Croze, Chloe Pfeiffer, Krista Parry, John Havens, Fiona Chan, Steven Sanders, Beth Rosen, Rob Rivenburgh, Molly Schonthal, Rustin Banks, Candice Broom, Kay Stewart, Monica Fuentes, Ted Rubin, Katie Farrer, Annalisa Esposito Bluhm, George Smith , Audrey McClelland, Amy Lupold Bair, Shannon Powell, Rick Calvert, Melissa Garcia, Monica Brady, Allison Blass, Holly Hamann, Jenn (SuperJennBlogs), Kim Orlando, Gwen Bell, Amanda (HighImpactMom), Jennifer Gniadecki, Toni Lynne (from Toni_GPB), Mrs. Flinger, ShortPumpPreppy, Wendy Piersall, chaotic Barb, Adriennevh, Kelby Carr, Ethan Goodman, Amy Callahan, Elizabeth Norton, Lizzydear and many others.
I was also excited to see my friends who I have already met (again), like.. Sugar Jones, Vdog, Barbara Jones, Katja Presnal, Colleen Padilla , Amy Allen Clark , Lucretia Pruitt, John Andrews, Jen Fowler, Lynnae McCoy , Jessica Smith, Tara Kuczykowski, Jyl Johnson Pattee, Christine Young, Wanda Young, Denise Sawyer, Alyssa Francis, Megan Jordan, Allison Worthington, Liz Strauss, Erika Lehmann, BizzieMommie, Anissa Mayhew, Sandy Jenney, Renee Ross, Arianne Segerman, and many many others.
And of course seeing stars like Paula Deen, Carson Kressley, Suai, Tim Gunn, Anya Marina, Chris Mann , and Brooke White.
And I also spent my time promoting and working for the wonderful sponsors that gave me the chance to go to Blogher in the first place, and meeting fabulous people from many many new companies.
I just hope that companies will not look at this as woman bloggers as a whole. We don’t all act like a bunch of stark ravaged scavengers at a conference. Some of us truly want to be there to connect, and work with companies on a professional level. And we will work hard for our sponsorships, no matter how large or small. We want to learn how to work together and support one another. We want companies to know we are serious about blogging and what we write. We want to network with other woman bloggers and support them too. We are not out just for a free trip or free stuff. We are out to have our voices be heard on products, issues, and concerns that we care about and that our readers want to know about as well.

Going to BlogHer ? Tip Sheet :
July 21, 2009 by theplus
Right about now people are packing and getting themselves primped and purtee to converge on a huge Blogger conference in Chicago called BlogHer 09′. If you are like me, you are making sure there is food at home for your family to eat. Making sure you pack everything you will need for the conference. Getting last minute things done. Posting a few blog posts ahead of time so it will be done and you won’t need to worry about posting too much while your away.
Well, being the multi -taskers that we are, sometimes we need help getting organized a little better so we won’t forget something important.
Therefore, I am putting together this quick tip list for you. Please feel free to share. If you like it, repost it to your site with linky love back to me.You can also Tweet about it, the goal is to help as many people as possible.
- Pack your clothes. Don’t forget your special outfits for cocktails, PJ parties (dont forget your bunny slippers), dancing, a 50’s outfit or creative outfit for BowlHer 09′, casual clothing, and comfy shoes. Make sure to pack your underwear, pantyhose, and bra’s.
- Pack your laptop, cords, webcam, mouse, and if you can an extra extension cord/power strip (sometimes they run out). Make sure to mark everything, cause after all most of them are black and look alike.
- pack your camera, digital camera, flip, camcorder, or anything else you have to take video/vlogs, and pics
- pack your cell phone, but make sure it is in a convenient pocket for easy access
- pack your money, purse, extra change for homeless people (if you like) and money for cabs, trains, quick snacks
- business cards and POKEN, these are EASILY forgotten so pack both or either but make sure to pack something with your name and info. on it. You will be meeting TONS of people who you will want to network with, this is very essential
- tickets – make sure you print out all of your confirmation info. Plane tickets, BlogHer admission tickets, party tickets, etc.. just in case you need proof that you signed up and/or RSVP’ed to different events.
- Gum, snacks, magazines, ipod, music to listen to and keep you busy on the plane, train, or automobile
- glasses, contacts, medication, tylenol, cosmetics, toiletries, hair brush, tooth brush (if your flying and never flown before, check airport guidelines on how to pack certain items. They WILL make you throw away things if they are over limit, and make sure prescriptions are in normal container from the pharmacy)
- swag – if your taking swag to hand out, don’t forget to bring it. You wont want to come home to 500 bags that now your will have to wait until the next conf. to pass out!
- invites – if you received mailed invites/drink tickets, dont forget to bring those
- gifts/trinkets – some people will bring little notions to give to the select few people that they talk to the most over twitter or through their blog, that they never met before. This is just something thoughtful to do, if your able
- stamps, although we aren’t going to be gone a whole long time, my kids love to get mail. As soon as I get in I send post cards out to them from where ever I am, it makes it a lot easier if you already have stamps to mail them with, this makes them feel happy even when mom’s gone
- YOURSELF !!! You wont get a ton of sleep at BlogHer because there is just so much going on, it will feel like your in a whirlwind, a happy little tornado, so get plenty of sleep when you can and you will want to “BRING IT” when it comes to meeting people, PR folks, companies, and just everyone, be yourself, but make sure you show them the best you that there is. First impressions can mean a lot! Be The RAWK STAR that you ARE !!! (remember this will be a lot of people’s first time at BlogHer (including mine) so don’t be nervous or shy, it will all be fine)
I hope that this can help you to prepare. Remember the point of the conference is to have fun, network, meet people, learn a ton, and ENJOY !
I can’t wait to meet you, SEE YOU SOON!!!!! (Chicago will never be the same!!!)

Momfinitions
As moms, sometimes we come up with unusual or made up names to call different things. These would be “Momfinitions”. Usually these words are funny, and sometimes only those in your family or close to you will understand what your talking about. Although as a mom, sometimes other moms can also pick up on these words, because it is like a new language that us moms can understand.
Here are some I came up with:
“Sticky Finger Larry” – (N.) (Stick-ee Fin-ger Larry) This is what I say when my kids are getting into anything and everything and making huge messes around the house. Dont ask me why I say Larry, it is just something funny I always say.
“Mamarattzi” – (N.) (mama- rot-zi) The name my kids gave to me because I am always taking pictures of them, especially now with having a blog. Instead of paparatzzi, they say, “Oh no, here comes the mamarattzi!” , LOL
“Son of a mothers goat” – (adj.) I always say this instead of swearing, especially when I am hurt, burn myself getting something out of the stove, or stub my toe running after a child.
“Sugar Nutts” – (adj.) another word I say instead of swearing. Used when something burns in the oven, something overfills or spills.
“tippy too man” – (n.) the little man I make walk by using my pointer and middle finger. He is great at distracting kids when they are hurt, or overly tired. Used as, “The tippy too man is gonna get ya”. Children automatically smile with glee forgetting about pain, teasing, or that they are being put into their bed.
To see some more Momfinitions that other moms came up with go to : the Momfinitions article on ParentsConnect.com I would love to hear some of your Momfinitions. Please do share in a comment on this post.
Thanks,

FASHION ALERT !!! Fashion TIPS for moms during Summer !!!
As Courtney Cox’s swimsuit malfunction demonstrates, Nippies Natural and Nippies from Bristols 6 are essentials for moms hitting up the pool with toddlers that hang on to your swimsuit. Our high-quality cover-ups shape curves and shields from overexposure and ‘chilly’ waters, giving stylish moms the confidence to wear a bathing suit without worry! (Goodness Gracious, Poor Courtney, I know she was upset, here’s hoping she reads my blog and this post can help her out!)
Nippies Natural is the first adhesive silicone nipple cover that is thin and matte, making it undetectable under clothing and swimsuits. The adhesive and non-adhesive versions are washable/waterproof/reusable, making it a budget-friendly find that you can wear during the day at the pool or out to dinner with your hubby.

For ‘haute’ mamas who want colorful coverage, Nippies are made from real lingerie fabrics in designer-inspired prints and sparkling sequins. Nippies are soft, stretchy and slightly supportive coverage in over 40 styles that coordinate with any bathing suit or outfit! (They really are beautiful)
This product is soo ingenius ! Now the makers of these definitely knew how to solve a problem.
Has this ever happened to you? Your child tugging on your swimsuit and out pops the “ladies”, or part of them? I know about this all too well. I am sooooooo glad to see that someone cares enough about us moms to keep us non – exposed !
I love when a maker of a product, creates the product because of a need. Nippies certainly does this.
The Nippies are made in 3 sizes – A, B, and C (like your bra). And Bristol6 is the only place that carries ALL 3 in the fabric ones!
Going swimming anytime soon? You may want to go to Bristol6 and place your order right away!
They are offering a generous 20% off coupon code to my Plus Size Mommy followers! The price is around $15 for a pack, but the coverage it gives you really is priceless!
use coupon code: PSMOMMY - valid until Aug. 31st! Also, if you buy 2 packs or more you get FREE shipping.

Wonderful Skin Care Regimens For Busy Woman
July 11, 2009 by theplus
“We want mothers to know that the time they give themselves to take care of their skin, prevent premature aging and protect from the day’s free radicals, stress, bacteria and sun, should be effective, luxurious and feel like a pampering experience – even if you’re doing it with a toddler pulling at your leg or a teenager begging for the car keys from three rooms away!”
Proactiv Solution® – Acne isn’t just a teen problem and it’s wishful thinking to blame that chocolate bar you scarfed down yesterday for the blemishes on your face today. In fact, adult acne (primarily affecting women) can last up to 20 years, triggered by hormonal shifts and stress, but, indeed, genetically predetermined. The Proactiv® 3-Step System and its extensive line of supporting products that treat acne, refine pores, prevent sun damage, etc., are the ideal example of the perfect “mother/daughter” skin care regimen. If you have a teenager in the house that has acne, chances are, you probably have it too. Drs. Katie Rodan and Kathy Fields developed Proactiv nearly 15 years ago as a solution for their adult female patients who just didn’t understand how to prevent their acne – and they say the same phenomenon they observed then still happens today: women are in denial about their acne. They don’t like to think of themselves as having acne. Yet, they have blemishes, regularly. Prevention is key and that’s what Proactiv was designed for.
Meaningful Beauty® — By beautiful mother/entrepreneur/super model, Cindy Crawford, the Meaningful Beauty® skin care line is an age maintenance regimen that combines a powerful antioxidant with luxurious anti-aging ingredients in beautiful packaging. The line includes a day moisturizer, a night treatment, a gentle cleanser, a great-smelling, pore-refining toner, a deep cleaning facial masque, a depuffing, brightening eye treatment, a neck and décolleté treatment (an often ignored area that gives us away!) and a glowing serum (a model’s secret!). Meaningful Beauty® is great for every day and, beautifully packaged, making it gift worthy as well.
In An Instant® — Brought to you by another hot, top model mom, Heidi Klum, In An Instant® is a great, fun line for those 20- to early 30-something moms or daughters who are looking for products that work instantly to minimize those tiny lines that might start appearing and need great products to cleanse, moisturize and prep their skin for the day. It’s fast and easy.
Natural Advantage® — A powerful anti-aging skin care line that leverages the power of pure Retinol and Alpha Hydroxy Acids to reverse the signs of ageing and give skin a renewed glow, Natural Advantage® is a luxurious workhorse for moms who just can’t mess around any more and want to find something that works and stick to it! Shown in an independent study to improve skin in just two weeks, the line includes a gentle daily cleansing gel that can be rinsed or wiped off, an all day moisturizer with AHAs and SPF, a nighttime renewal complex with Retinol and a firming and lifting neck treatment.
Meaningful Beauty and In an Instant were so wonderful to use. I tried them both and they both made my skin feel so clean and smoothe. In an Instant was so quick and easy to use. I was able to incorporate it into my daily routine very easily. The night treatment and Glowing serum were my favorites to use from the Meaninful Beauty Line. These models formula’s really work wonderfully and were not harsh on my skin like other products I have tried. I have extremely sensative skin, so I have to be very careful what I use on it. I started off trying these out on small parts of my face to make sure they weren’t going to harm me, and neither one did. I strongly suggest this with any new beauty product you try, especially if you are sensative too.
Here is to a beautiful new you !!! Your skin will be glowing after you use these treatments !!!
