In my last post I had told you about how I was going to be helping to build a home for a Family in Pittsburgh with Libby’s and Habitat For Humanity. Well, I was a bit off, I didn’t actually help build the home (it was already done) but I did help to put final touches in the home for the family.

I was allowed to bring my 14 yr. old son Xavier with me. It was an experience I don’t think either of us will forget. It was such a happy time. And it felt REALLY good knowing we were helping a mom and her children move into their new home. While we were there, we actually got the opportunity to meet the Mom who the house was for. She stopped by with some home inspectors and Habitat staff for a final walk through. You could feel her joy as it was so illuminated on her face. She was a bit emotional and very happy. I was proud to be able to be a part of this experience.
My son enjoyed it too.

We hung blinds, my son painted scuff marks, We put together a brand new table and chairs for her complete with a set of new dishes, silverware, and table place settings. Another team built a new picnic table for the family, all from scratch, I was extremely impressed.

Here are some pictures of our day:

The generous Libby’s Ladies, also brought canned food (Libby’s of course) fruits and vegetables to stock the families new pantry.

The Libby’s girls were so wonderful. I would work with them again any day! They were witty and funny and just extremely fun to be with. They made the whole day go by so quickly. It didn’t even seem like work with them with us.
The Habitat For Humanity Staff were also really nice and fun to work with as well. We learned so much from them too.

Then the Wonderful day came for this beautiful new home. It is the ribbon cutting ceremony and a Christianing of their brand new home. This was a very special day for this family, and now they have a new home to be proud of and to now make this house a home! (Below, New homeowner Roxanne with her children, proud new owners of the home)

It was a wonderful experience, with wonderful co-workers, on a beautiful day in Pittsburgh! Thank you Mom It Forward for inviting me to help with this amazing experience.

Yesterday was a dim day but ended up with a light at the end of my tunnel. Yesterday I was all packed and ready to get up and goto #TypeAMom Conference when I was awakened abruptly by my 13 yr. old son who was doubled over in pain with horrible stomach pains. I had an hour until my ride was coming to get me. But at the same time, I knew I should take him to go get checked by a Doctor. I was worried it was his appendix or something. He was crying in pain,”Mommy do something, Mommy, don’t you have anything to stop the pain?” It was heart wrenching. So, I told him I will skip my trip and take you to the ER. With my family, My family ALWAYS comes first.

So we hopped in the car at 8 am and I drove him the 20 minutes to the hospital ER. Upon arriving at the ER, I noticed they were remodeling it, so there was smells of paint fumes, and loud jack hammer type noises, and faux walls put up. The parking lot was packed. I had lost all glimmer of hope to get my ride to North Carolina. So, I called my one friend (@craftymamaof4) who I was riding with. Four of us were going to go in a Chevy Traverse, which I was also so excited about. I told her, I would not be able to go, but I had to stay with my son. She was sad, but said, it’s okay…

So, I signed my son in and headed to the waiting room.

Finally after about a half of an hour, we got called to triage. The place where they screen you before you go back to the exam rooms. It was a good thing his appendix wasn’t about to erupt or something, cause, it took a HALF HOUR!

After triage, we were then shuffled back to an exam room. They got my son comfortable (as he could possibly be in such pain, which he rated a 7 out of 10 in intensity). It was cold there, the lights were bright, and it was very busy. Also, you could still hear the pounding of workers on the other side of those faux walls.

We waited, and waited, and waited. While waiting… My friend text messaged me and said the trip was delayed, because her car wouldn’t start! The car we were going to ride in over to meet up with the 2 other friends with the Traverse! I was starting to see a little sparkle of hope… maybe if I could get these people to test my son, tell me what was wrong, and I could either get him to a place where he was okay for me to leave, or if they sent him home with some meds. I may still have a slim chance to go to my conference.

Of course, if they were gonna have to do surgery or something major, I would tell my friends I still couldn’t go and leave him and to go on without me.

So, finally a Doctor came in and examined him. She pressed and prodded on his tummy, and asked him where it hurt.. The she ordered some blood work tests, and an x-ray.

So, we waited more… I was so tired and hungry by this point, and wanted to scream…

So the “vampire” of the hospital came in and took some blood. Then he was sent on to the X-ray area. The X-ray people were pretty efficient and quick. We were back in his room in no time.

I felt so badly that he was in such pain, and there was nothing I could do to help him. It was like I was helpless. So, I just kept talking to him, and trying to get his mind off of the pain. We watched some TV and he rested (or tried to).

Then we had to get moved because the room he was in had a monitor in it for your heart, and he didn’t really need that, but another patient did, so they moved us to a room at the end of the hall, where the noisy construction workers were even louder and the paint smell was even more intense. (Not a very great place to be and not conducive at all for a person in pain that is trying to relax and rest.

Not to mention, I wasn’t even the patient, and I was getting sick and a migraine over it…

So, finally the test results came back. His enzymes in his pancreas were a little elevated, but not enough that they thought he has pancreatic and he had bowel backed up in his intestines. So they told him to drink a ton of water, gave him some mild laxatives, and told him to get a ton of rest.

Around the same time, my phone started to die. But the last text I got from my friend was that they decided to give me some more time and they went to have lunch. (how awesome of friends are they? to postpone the whole trip to wait so hopefully I could still go!) So, we had to wait for him to be discharged, and then I hurriedly went home. I told my mom (who is watching them while I am away) about the prescription and what the doctor said to do, and what to look for in case he would get worse. Kissed everyone good-bye, and proceeded to take my luggage out to the front lawn to wait for my friends.

They finally called me and said they were on their way. I was finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel of darkness. I was going to make my trip after all!

So the shiny maroon Chevy Traverse pulled up in front of the house, and we got my luggage into it, and headed on the road to the Type A Mom conference in Asheville, NC !!! It was an 8 hour trip, which ended up being a little longer, so we could stop and eat, and such. We drove through the beautiful mountains, and with such great company, it didn’t feel like a long trip at all. We had great conversations, and looked at the beauty of the mountains around us, and then the sunset, and eventually the moon.

Our ears popped as we went up and down the PA, WV, TN, and NC mountains. We even got the chance to use the OnStar program in the Chevy Traverse when we noticed we were almost out of gas! lol

It was such a smooth sailing trip, once we got out of the dock of Pittsburgh…We didn’t even remember about gas until we were on “E”, lol

Here is a clip of us talking to the OnStar lady…

It was a neat experience.

So, we are finally here, in our Hotel and getting ready for the conference to start. I have already called home and checked on everyone, and all is okay. I am just so thankful for my friends,(@craftymamaof4, @Marybabysteps, and @cararolinson) and my family for making this trip possible. We had many obstacles and Mountains to climb, literally, but we made it!

9/11/2001 – Me sitting at work at a child care center. My co-worker is across the hall listening to her radio, yells over, Beth go turn on the TV in the break room, something bad is going on. My children were upstairs in the daycare, my husband at work. I went to the break room and turned on the VERY old TV. And there it was…The horrific, most sad and scary show I have ever watched in my life. The “Breaking News”.

I immediately went to check on my kids, then started thinking about where all of my family members were. I informed the rest of the staff, we are under attack! Then I went back to my office called my husband, told him to come home NOW. He didnt know what was going on at that point.

The rest of the day most of the staff stayed in that staff room, just watching in disbelief what was going on. I wanted to like call the towers, tell them to get out, but no call would’ve been fast enough. I said omg, the people those people, I wanted to reach through the television screen and catch the people jumping, I wanted to reach in and get those people out. It was truly a day I will NEVER FORGET…

It seemed like eternity for my husband to get home. He worked ,at that time, in the city. After hearing about the plane going down in Shanksville I was so worried more would come to Pittsburgh. After all, there was so much uncertainty of what was going on. When he finally got to my work to pick me and the kids up, we drove home with the radio on. It was so surreal. I felt like I just wanted to awaken from this horrible nightmare.

We finally reached home, traffic was horrible, so again it seemed like it took us forever. It almost felt like the whole day was moving in slow motion. We came home I hugged and kissed my kids, called my mom and sister to check on them and everyone. Everyone was okay but still in disbelief.

I remember asking my mom to call my Aunt who lives in Long Island, NY. She tried and tried but the phone lines were down. I figured my Aunt would be okay, but I had cousins and 1 was a firefighter and the other’s I thought worked in Manhattan. She finally did get in contact with them a few days later. All were okay. Praise The Lord.

I remember the following days were like Hell on Earth. I couldn’t pull myself away from the TV. It was like I was glued to it. We watched as they would talk about pulling bodies from the rubble. The stories of the men and woman who they found dead. They talked about the people from the planes. Who they were and what they did for a living, and where they were flying to. They spoke of the children who perished.

They showed people picketing with signs looking for their loved ones, pictures being hung everywhere around the city, “Have you seen her/him”. They looked so sad and as if in a daze.

They showed the devastation in New York, in Shanksville, and in Washington DC.
They showed scientific schematics on how they thought all of this went down. They talked about the terrorists. Who they were. Why they did this to America.

For at least three 9/11′s after the first one. I kept my family in my house, and usually we all snuggled together in my bed. No one went to work this day, or school. I couldn’t bear to let them go. The horrifying news that day just sticks in my mind, body, and soul. I just never can get the thoughts out of my head.
I cry every 9/11…EVERY single one. The thoughts of this day just sit there upon my heart.
I am better now and we can now leave the house on this day, but I still EVERYDAY hug my husband and kids a little more tighter and a little more longer. Tell them I love them and let them go.

I know I will never EVER forget 9/11/2001. NEVER…

The people who perished and places that perished on that day are all strangers to me. But every year or every time I think about them, I weep. I also weep for the families and children who are left on this Earth as well.
I still ask God for protection over everyone. And a Strong arm to “hold” us and get us through.

Where were You on 9/11/2001 ?

On Aug. 10th, 2010 an inspirational movie that will touch your life hit store shelves. “Letters To God” – the heartfelt and inspiring story of what happens when one boy’s journey touches the lives of his family, friends and community. Hope is contagious in this uplifting new DVD from Possibility Pictures and Vivendi Entertainment.

An intimate, moving and often funny story, the film follows the path of a young child with a terminal illness who through his battle becomes a warrior for hope and a champion to everyone around him. Surrounded by a loving family and community, the young boy takes comfort in prayers written as letters to God.

These letters find their way to a conflicted postman who is at a crossroads in his life, searching for meaning. Featuring moving performances from Robyn Lively (“Saving Grace,” “30 Rock”), Jeffrey S.S. Johnson (“Criminal Minds,” “Burn Notice”), Tanner Maguire (“Lost,” “Brothers & Sisters”), Bailee Madison (An Invisible Sign of My Own, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark), Michael Bolten (Flipped) and Ralph Waite (“Days of Our Lives”), the film is a stirring “tribute to faith, hope, and love through the eyes of a child” (TBN).

From one of the producers of Fireproof and Facing the Giants, and inspired by a true story,Letters to God received the highest Dove Approval Rating and an endorsement from the Parent Television Council. Brimming with bonus features, including On-Set Devotionals, Behind the Scenes, The Music Behind the Movie, Character Stories with Cast, Short Stories, Outtakes and Bloopers and more,

Synopsis:
Tyler Doherty is an extraordinary eight-year-old boy armed with strong faith and courage as he faces his daily battle against cancer. Surrounded by a loving family and community, Tyler’s prayers take the form of letters he sends to his ultimate pen pal, God, on a daily basis. These letters find their way into the hands of Tyler’s postman, Brady, who is at a crossroads in his life searching for meaning. Brady at first is confused over what to do, but his decision ultimately is a testament to the power of Tyler’s shining spirit, bravery and grace. Inspired by a true story, Letters to God delivers a message of hope, faith and courage that others can apply to their own personal struggles regardless of what they may face in their everyday lives.

From Me:
I love movies like this one. It is a moving and heartwarming movie. Movies that are inspired by a true story are always so wonderful to watch. I love how much of a warrior Tyler is and how courageous he is. The many messages in this movie I can definitely identify with in my life, and I am sure you would be able to as well.

When people think about travelling with their family pet, it sounds like it can be a ton of fun. I thought this too when taking my Chihuahua Bella on a family trip. I have taken Bella in the car locally before, but this was the first time taking her on a family long distance trip. There are a lot of things I forgot to take into consideration. Especially not being able to leave her in the car due to VERY hot weather. It made it more complicated when stopping to eat, shop, look around, and goto rest stops. Someone always had to stay back in the A/C with her. This is something our family is not used to doing. As we always eat meals together and all. On this road trip, however, we ate a lot of meals together , but in the car
It wasn’t a horrible thing, just different.

Here is another part of our trip, at the hotel, and getting there…

I was recently honored with the title “Rice Krispies Brand Ambassador for The Motherhood.com” Summer Edition of the Rice Krispies Recipe Box Challenge, along with 9 other woman. We were asked to participate in a very fun project where we were sent a “Mystery box” and a “Mystery Clue Word” in the mail. We had to get with our team by using Twitter, Facebook, and any other way possible to complete a sentence by putting each of our mystery word clues together. Then using the mystery ingredients in our Mystery box and other ingredients we had to come up with a recipe to go along with that sentence.

I was so excited to be a part of this awesome project. I love clue’s and games, and this was right up my alley, cause I love cooking too. I must admit I was a bit nervous on how/what recipe I would make. But after thinking about it the moment we fit our sentence together, “Fourth of July’s Cooler When Kids Help Create Rice Krispies Treats Recipes!” (WITH “COOLER” being the Main CLUE WORD) It was like a light bulb turned on in my head and I was ready to Rock and Roll with this.

I couldn’t wait to get started today, in fact, if I wasn’t so tired, I would’ve started yesterday night after our sentence was approved, but you know, I did have to go buy other ingredients today and I did need some sort of sleep

So today bright and early I got up with my girls and we went to get pedicure’s and then we hit Walmart to shop for what we needed. They were so excited too. I told them my idea’s and they were sooooo wanting to get home to create our recipes!

I made a Muvee of us creating our recipes. I can only submit 1 of my recipes for this contest. The winning recipe will get their recipe posted to www.ricekrispies.com. I am hoping of course to win, but I am so excited to just share my recipes with you and also see what wonderful creations the other ladies come up with.

Here is My Muvee followed by my 3 recipes. Please note, I am very new at making vlogs/movies on my blog, so please bear with me I am hoping to get better with every movie I make.

To let you in on what was happening on the video a little -
The first pics of the stars and paper are what I was sent for my clues. I was also sent a box of Rice Krispies and a bag of Jet Puffed Marshmallows. I just wanted to include these because I thought it was so sweet.

Then you can see me melting butter and marshmallows. Then you can see me making all of the food and in some instances my family members enjoying what I came up with! They were all very pleased at the treats I made.

Now for the Recipes :

1. Strawberry Rice Krispie Cakes

–

Butter – 3 Tablespoons
Marshmallows – 1 pack
Rice Krispies – 6 cups
Strawberries – sliced (about 2 pints, depends on how many people your serving)
Cool Whip
Vanilla Ice Cream
cupcake pan

Melt butter and Marshmallows in large pan. Put Rice Krispies into a large bowl. Pour melted butter/marshmallow mixture over the Rice Krispies and mix well. Spray cupcake pan with Non-stick cooking spray. Mold Rice Krispie treats into cupcake pan into circles, let cool. Wash and slice strawberries.
After Rice Krispie “cakes” cool, remove one and place on a plate. put 1 scoop of Vanilla ice cream on top (or your favorite kind). Spoon starberries on top. Put a dollop of Cool Whip on top. Use patriotic sprinkles onto the Whipped topping. Of course top it off with a 1/2 of a strawberry. VOILÀ ! Serve…

2. Rice Krispie Ice Cream Sandwiches

-

3 Tablespoons of Butter
6 cups of Rice Krispies (can use plain or Cocoa Krispies)
Vanilla Ice Cream (or your favorite kind)
1 pack of Jet Puffed Marshmallows

Melt 3 Tbs. of Butter and 1 bag of Marshmallows in a pan. Put 6 cups of Rice Krispies into a large mixing bowl. Pour melted mixture over the top of the Rice Krispies and mix well. Spread onto a thin baking sheet. Press it down firm onto pan. Cool.
Cut into rectangular squares (or any shape you desire). Take one flat rectangle off of cookie sheet and place on plate. Top with Vanilla Ice Cream. Add another Rice Krispie Treat rectangle on top, pressing down firm into a sandwich, Serve. You can also place these into individual baggies and store in the freezer to save for later yumminess.

3. Snap, Crackle, Pop Sticks

 -

6 Cups of Rice Krispies
3 Tablespoons of butter
1 pack of Jet Puffed Marshmallows
Vanilla Ice Cream
Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup
Smucker’s Chocolate Fudge Shell Ice Cream topping
6 oz. plastic cups
Craft Sticks (like tongue depressors)
1 – 16 oz. cup

Melt butter and Marshmallows in a big pan. Place 6 cups of Rice Krispies into a large bowl. Cover with melter Marshmallow Mixture, Mix Well. Squirt in some Hershey’s Chocolate Syrup until Rice Krispies turn chocolate colored. Squirt into 6 oz. plastic cups enough Syrup to cover the bottoms. next layer in Rice Krispie Treat Mixture, Then a layer of Vanilla Ice Cream. Then 1 more layer of Rice Krispie Treat mixture. Stick a stick into the middle and place into Freezer to set (about an hour). Pour Smucker’s Chocolate Fudge Shell Ice Cream topping into the 16 oz. cup. When set take out cups of mixture, pull gently out of cups with Stick (will be like a Popsicle). Dip All the way down into chocolate shell and swirl until the whole thing is covered (except for the stick). Take out and let shell harden around the ice cream mixture. Bon Appetite!
Once these are hardened you can place into individual baggies and store in Freezer.

I received the cutest needle work helper. It is a Kneedle Pet. It is made from a lightweight, durable foam and can hold several different items with pointed ends. This allows an avid knitter or crocheter to keep different needles at her fingertips.

It can also hold different pins and sewing needles in it. It comes with or without a “Kozy”.

A “Kozy” is a cover to put over the foam to make it soooo cute. The one that I was sent is in the shape of a fish.It is blue with googly eyes. Very cute!

You can either get the pet with the kozy premade or as a kit to make the kozy yourself.

The kit contains the Kneedle Pet foam along witha written knit or crochet pattern.

The stitches used to make the Kozy look simple to me and could be used as a first project for a beginner!

This would also be so cute as a room decoration for a child who likes fish or has a nautical theme for their bedroom. It could be used as a pencil/pen holder on a teens desk. What is nice is that the kozy is removable, so it can be laundered. If you’re interested in ordering a Kneedle Pet, or learning more about it visit www.kneedlepet.com.

Scene It?, the number one DVD trivia game worldwide, is now available for play in beta on Facebook! As you know, players start by creating a “Hollywood hopeful”, a customizable avatar, and then start playing movie-themed trivia and puzzles. A new quiz is addedeach day, all featuring licensed content from movie studios, giving players a great reason to come back 365 days a year. As players earn “glitz points” and level up, they have the ability to purchase amazing clothing, houses, pets, jewelry etc. for their super stylish avatar.

What’s also new, is that they just started our second monthly Tournament, where users play one themed quiz per week (FB connections make up their team). They can invite friends to join in, and points get combined into an overall team score. Prizes include a MacBook pro, iPod and Scene It? board games, making it fun, competitive and compelling.

The expansion from strictly a retail box game to the world of online has been an interesting one. They can be much more nimble with updating the content, customizing quizzes, allowing user-generated-content and predictions and creating a different look & feel for the game than we do with the box editions. They have been growing the Facebook game organically, tapping into movie buffs, Scene It? fans, and the generally huge Facebook community, but it’s new territory for them. Play a couple quizzes, feel free to blog or Tweet about it, and definitely let them know what you think! www.facebook.com/sceneitonline

Have Fun!

PGA Free Lesson Month is back this May, but with a new twist for 2010 – Free Family Golf Clinics.

In addition to the individual free 10-minute golf lessons given by PGA and LPGA Professionals, there are also a number of facilities that are hosting free family golf clinics, giving families the opportunity to learn and participate in the game of golf together.

Anyone can go to PlayGolfAmerica.com, click on PGA Free Lesson Month, insert your zip code and a list of participating PGA/LPGA Professionals, along with Family Golf Clinics, will be listed.

More than one million free lessons have been given during PGA Free Lesson Month since the program was launched in 1998.

Every golfer who takes a free lesson and registers at PlayGolfAmerica.com/FLM has an opportunity to win a two-day/two-night golf getaway to The PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance in Port St. Lucie, Fla., including hotel accommodations, round-trip, economy airfare, and a custom-fit set of golf clubs.

Join the millions of people who have improved their golf game the last 12 years by participating in PGA Free Lesson Month held at facilities nationwide throughout May. New for 2010, PGA Free Lesson Month has added free family golf clinics, giving families the opportunity to learn and participate in the game of golf together.

“We have added free Family Golf Clinics during PGA Free Lesson Month this year, giving families who are looking for new things to do an opportunity to do something different and have an unforgettable experience,” said PGA of America President Jim Remy. “Whether as an individual or with friends or family, PGA Free Lesson Month offers the perfect excuse to get outside, learn new skills and get a little exercise, all while enjoying the game of golf.”

PGA Free Lesson Month is designed to reach new golfers and help existing golfers improve their game with free, 10-minute golf lessons conducted by participating PGA and LPGA Professionals nationwide throughout the month of May. PGA Free Lesson Month gives individuals and families an opportunity to improve their game, making golf more fun and enjoyable for everyone. While the affordability of PGA Free Lesson Month is evident, since it’s complimentary, the health benefits received by playing the game of golf are invaluable as well.

All PGA/LPGA Professionals participating in PGA Free Lesson Month along with a list of family golf clinics can be found at PlayGolfAmerica.com.

According to Golf Digest, a person can learn a number of various techniques in a 10-minute lesson. How to change your grip to cure a slice, how to read breaking putts and how to draw the ball for more distance are just a few things that can be tweaked during a free lesson with a PGA/LPGA Professional.

Since The PGA of America and Golf Digest jointly launched this nationwide campaign in 1998, more than 1,131,000 free lessons have been given. Last year, nearly 5,241 PGA/LPGA Professionals nationwide gave more than 80,075 free lessons to consumers. Nearly 800 10-minute lessons were given to individuals with disabilities.

“The number of free lessons that have been given over the past 12 years is an incredible accomplishment and the Family Golf Clinics that have been added this year are a fantastic, new component to the program,” said Jerry Tarde, chairman and editorial director of Golf Digest Publications. “We are extremely proud to be associated with PGA Free Lesson Month and thank The PGA of America and the thousands of PGA and LPGA Professionals who continue to dedicate their time to make this such a successful initiative.”

One of the most successful growth-of-the-game initiatives in the golf industry, PGA Free Lesson Month is a collaborative campaign spearheaded by The PGA of America, Golf Digest Publications and Golf Channel.
