Hi I’m CraftyMamaof4 and I’m here because recently my friend Beth from Plus Size Mommy asked me to help her with some reviews since her blog got swallowed up by a bad code and she was really far behind! I was really pleased when she passed on a McDavid Hexpad chest protector for my 10 year old to try.
Right now we are deep into baseball in the Crafty Shack my 10 year old plays on the in house team as well as the traveling tournament team. He has been bugging me for years to play football and I have continuously told him no because of all the risks of injuries in football, little did I realize how dangerous baseball can be as well.
Did you know that even the slightest impact from a baseball to the chest depending on the timing can significantly injure a child or even cause death? According to information I found online between 1996 and 2007 there were 188 cases of Commotio cordis reported and more than half of those cases were during organized sports. What is Commotio cordis? According to Wikipedia, Commotio cordis is a sudden disturbance of heart rhythm observed mostly in boys and young men during participation in sports. This disturbance can cause arrthymias which, depending on the timing in relation to the cardiac cycle, can cause sudden death.
McDavid Sports Medicine decided to take action and developed their HexPad technology to help reduce the risk of Commotio crodis. The new youth HexPad sternum shirt is a compression shirt with HexPad technology built into the sternum to protect the front and chest from impacts. HexPad provides a layer of lightweight protection built to help protect athletes who compete in sports with body to body contact and body to ground contact. The patented lightweight, breathable, athletic foam allows for continuous protection and unfettered mobility. The compression fabric supports large muscle groups to avoid muscle pulls and fatigue. The fabric also moves with an athlete’s body to help stop skin irritations, chaffing and abrasions.
Since receiving our HexPad shirt I have noticed several other players wearing chest protectors as well. The ones they have look similar to this

As you can see it straps around their neck and most of the kid that wear them complain about it rubbing on the back of their neck. The McDavid HexPad shirt is a full sized shirt with the pad built into the shirt.

You don’t need to be a baseball player to see that the HexPad appears to be much more comfortable. My son has not complained one bit about having to wear it. Thank you McDavid for making safety comfortable.
You can purchase your own HexPad protector here for $31.99.
