Misha’s Nutcracker by Roman Yakub in collaberation with Elaine Ulman is a book for people 8 and up.  It is the story of a homeless Russian boy, who is cold and hungry and exhausted from just trying to survive.  He finds his way into the beautiful opera house in St Petersburg, where he finds warmth for his body and soul in the attic.  When he, at last feels safe, he sleeps.   That is where, Oksana, the chief seamstress wakes him up and feeling sorry for him, she feeds him, cleans him up, and gets him clothing. She and her husband become very fond of him and he falls in love with the music and the dancing of The Nutcracker. He dreams of dancing with the children of The Nutcracker, but, his dream turns into a nightmare and he has to use his street smarts to escape from “The Mouse King”.   This book was very enjoyable with all of the twists and turns of a boy living on the streets mixed in with the magic of the theater. A good read!
