Eco-conscious Cleaning Products From Staples – Sustainable Earth

September 1, 2010 by theplus

Staples has recently introduced a new line of cleaning products called “Sustainable Earth“. There are 2 products in this line to help you “clean green” an all-purpose cleaner and a glass cleaner. You can purchase them in either 32 oz. spray bottles or a 1 gallon refill.

These products are designed for the environment and are green seal certified.

I recently got the chance to try the all purpose cleaner and it works very well. Very equivalent to any other cleaners I have used. It doesn’t have a smell to it like other “green” cleaners I have used. Which I love this aspect because another one I have tried actually upsets my stomach when I use it due to the smell.
I am very pleased at the way the Sustainable Earth product I tried and would definitely will buy this to use in the future. It makes me feel good to know I am using products that are Earth Friendly that still do the job that I need them to perform.

Glass Cleaner – Makes cleaning windows and hard surfaces quick and easy. Alcohol, ammonia, and phosphate-free.

Multi- Purpose Cleaner – You can use this product on floors, walls, countertops, desks, cabinents, glass, porcelain, and other water -washable surfaces.
It has Neutral pH and ammonia and is phosphate-free.

Egg Recall – Not Eggland’s Best Eggs

August 24, 2010 by theplus

By now you must have heard about the egg recall.

Not only did we want to let you know that Eggland’s Best eggs are not part of any recall you may have heard about, but we also wanted to give you some hard facts:

· EB eggs are safe.

· EB eggs are not produced in Iowa

· EB has the most comprehensive food safety quality assurance program and will never compromise when it comes to consumer safety.

What makes us different?

· The Eggland’s Best food safety quality assurance program was introduced in 1995 and adheres to and goes beyond the FDA Egg Safety Rule in many ways, including our requirement to vaccinate all hens 3 times to create resistance to Salmonella infection so that consumers can use EB eggs with confidence.

Yes, that is correct! All EB hens are vaccinated 3 times against Salmonella!

· Eggland’s Best hens are fed an all-natural, all-vegetarian diet that does not contain animal fat or other animal by-products, a potential cause for salmonella.
· We require extensive cleaning and disinfecting of poultry houses.
· We require strict pest control inspections.
· We require proper egg washing and plant sanitation procedures.
· We implement a strict bio-security program– ensuring that all visitors and employees on farm premises follow proper disease-preventive practices.
· We require proper refrigeration of eggs at or below 45 degrees.
· All operations are certified under the Safe Quality Food (SQF) Program.
· All plants producing EB eggs are inspected by USDA.
-All farms and processing plants are inspected by a certified veterinarian on an ongoing basis.
-EB has stricter standards for eliminating cracked eggs, which helps to ensure that no bacteria get into EB eggs.
-USDA allows regular generic eggs to be stored up to 21 days before packing into cartons, whereas Eggland’s Best sets a maximum of 7 days. Most EB eggs leave our farms within 24-48 hours after production, or as soon as they have completely cooled to 45 degrees or below. Fresher eggs are more resistant to bacterial growth.
-EB conducts over 45,000 tests annually to ensure that our product meets the highest standards.
-A USDA publication states, “After washing, the eggs should be quickly and completely dried to reduce the risk that any bacteria remaining on the surface of the eggs are aspirated into the eggs as they cool to ambient temperature.” Only Eggland’s Best uses supplementary drying fans to ensure that eggs are 100% dry when eggs are packed into cartons. -Regular eggs that go into the carton wet, sit in a moist environment conducive to bacteria and mold growth.
-EB eggs are produced by younger hens, not just because the egg quality is better, but also because younger hens are more resistant to disease. They will most likely have had fewer chances for exposure to disease.
-FDA put into effect the Egg Safety Rule on July 9, 2010, but the program was proposed in September of 2004. Eggland’s Best began to implement the program years before it went into effect.

Cool Down With “Cool Off”

August 24, 2010 by theplus

Let’s Face it, it has been HOT this summer. The temperature has been rising to 85-90 degree’s everyday, and you do not even feel like going outside in the heat. I know my kids and I have been staying in the A/C as much as possible. We only go outside in the mornings or evenings when it cools down a bit.

But my kids say that this is no fun. They want to goto parks and play more outside and enjoy the summer fun. Especially now when it is getting close to them going back to school.

Well, I was recently told about and received samples of “Cool Off”.  This is an innovative, personal cooling towelette. Which  I think would be wonderful for woman suffering “mini vacations” from menopause, if you get what I mean ? ;)

This pocket sized coolant is all natural and will cool you down and help you re-energize yourself.

These are great for sports players as well. It is a great tip to keep some around the house, in the car, in your gym bag, at work, or even in your pocket.

Cool Off is available at CVS.com, Amazon.com, and also at Duane Reade stores in New York.

The only thing I did not care for, and maybe the company could change, would be to make them fragrance free. They have a pretty strong odor. I would rather it be fragrance free or a lower intense smell.

Do you have a hubby that loves game meat? Are looking for healthier meats/meals to cook for your family? Do you love tender, lean steaks that melt in your mouth ? Look no further! I have recently been send a box of High Plains Bison meat, and it fits into all of the above categories, and more!

I was sent a variety pack box with hot sausages, steaks, hot dogs, and burgers and man o man did I make a huge hit with my husband! We enjoyed grilling and eating all of the Bison meat. It was so good and to me really didn’t taste too different than beef, except it is so much leaner! There is hardly a drop of grease. Because of the non-grease factor, you do need to cook them slow and low so you do not dry them out, but the High Plains Bison company has taken care of that for you. The meat comes to you in a box with instructions on how to cook the various cuts.

I was really impressed with the selection of meats, I mean Bison hot dogs! How neat! I also loved the way it is so professionally wrapped to seal in the freshness.

I love how good this meat is for my family. A lot of the meat carry the American Heart Assoc. seal of approval. Meaning that it has met the criteria for saturated fat and cholesterol for healthy people over the age of 2.
Bison meat has less calories than beef, chicken, pork, and even fish!
Less fat, less saturated fat, and more iron! There is so many great factors about eating Bison over other meats.
I am truly in awe of all of this.

P & G Home Away From Home @ #Blogher

August 22, 2010 by theplus
Filed under Earth, Family, Health/Fitness, Heart, Home

As many of you know I attended the Blogher 2010 conference a couple weeks ago in New York City. While I was there, I got the chance to tour a replica house that was sponsored by P & G. It was called the “Home Away From Home”. It was a great experience. I love many of the P & G brands such as Bounty, Pur, and Cascade. The home consisted of Eukanuba & Iams on the outside, where they also had a cute dog you could meet. Bounty, Pur, and Cascade were in the kitchen. Swiffer, and Febreze were in the office, Downy, Tide, and Puffs in the bedroom. And Pantene, Olay, Crest, Vics, and COVERGIRL in the bathroom.

It was an awesome way to set it all up and tie all of the wonderful P & G Brands in together as 1 happy family.
I loved meeting the people and the samples were awesome.
I got the chance to discuss with some of the reps. how and why I love some of the products, such as VICS. I told them how VICS is a lifesaver in my family of Asthmatics, and how using VICS on my daughter when she had lung surgery and fell ill with a bad cold after she came home from the hospital.
I felt really valued and listened to as a mom consumer.

I just wanted to share with you this fantastic experience and let you know what a good GREAT P & G is, and how happy I am to see that they were a sponsor at Blogher 2010.

What I also learned there in the house that impressed me greatly was how P & G are making a difference. (And how I can too). They have started (in 2004) a P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CDSW) Program. Providing clean and safe drinking water to children in developing countries. They are using PUR Purifier water packets to make the drinking water so much better for these children. They are SAVING LIVES. By being an attendee of Blogher 2010 they have donated 1 year of clean drinking water to 100 families in the developing world!

What an amazing company. I will truly be making sure to buy my P & G products with pride, knowing that I am supporting a company who will be supporting others and helping children.

There Is More To Sending Kids Back To School Than With Just Pencils & Notebooks; You Have To Help Keep The Germs Away Too & WIN

August 6, 2010 by theplus

With nearly 22 million school days lost each year due to the common cold and flu (CDC) and as many as 2.7 million bacterial found per square inch on common school surfaces (NSF International), it´s no wonder that 82 percent of parents with kids in grades K-5 fret about the germs in their children´s classrooms (according to a survey conducted by Seventh Generation).

This school year, Seventh Generation is sharing tips from best-selling author and pediatrician, Dr. Alan Greene, to help parents protect their child´s health during back-to-school season. Dr. Greene suggests taking the following precautions:

Optimize the immune system

  • Reap the benefits of probiotics like those found in yogurt. A recent study showed that children who received enough probiotics daily throughout the cold and flu season had a significant reduction in the number of illnesses they had and, when they did get sick, the symptoms were both milder and didn’t last as long.
  • Be sure your child is getting plenty of vitamin D from the sun, from food, or from a supplement.
  • Build a strong foundation. Good food, good sleep, and good physical activity all help the immune system to flourish.

Be wise about reducing unnecessary exposure to harmful germs

  • Teach children the key times to clean their hands in the classroom. The most important times include after sneezing, coughing or using the restroom, upon leaving “high-risk” places (recess, naptime, play stations) and before meals or snacks.
  • Sixty percent of teachers surveyed said that they request that parents donate disinfecting wipes to the classroom. Seventh Generation´s disinfecting wipes kill 99.99% of germs* naturally using the active ingredient thyme, a component of thyme oil which is derived from the herb thyme.
  • Stress the importance of not touching their eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
  • Demonstrate to your children how to cover their mouth and nose for every cough and sneeze. This simple maneuver has spectacular results in decreasing the spread of viruses and bacteria floating about the room, waiting to be inhaled.

*Refer to disinfecting product labels for full details

WIN !!!!!

One of my lucky readers will also win a Seventh Generation “Back-to-School” kit that includes a Seventh Generation backpack, two canisters of Seventh Generation disinfecting wipes (one for home and one to donate to your child´s classroom), disinfecting multi-surface spray cleaner, facial tissue and paper towels.  (As Shown)

Here is how :

  • Leave me a comment on how you keep your household germ-free during the school year ?l = 1 entry
  • Comment and tell us how your keep your kids healthy and germ-free ?= 1 entry
